MAKING OLMSTEAD A REALITY
STAUNTON, VA
On June 22nd of 1999, the United States Supreme Court ruled that unjust segregation of people with disabilities was a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Olmstead v. L.C. case stemmed from a lawsuit filed by two women with mental disabilities and developmental delays, who successfully sued to be released from a Georgia regional facility where they were being forced to live. The Olmstead case provided legal precedent, but it did not provide housing.
