Housing, Home, and Highland Hopes

Barbara’s Highland County apartment tells two different stories—one of luck and one of waiting. At 95, Barbara, an artist, has built a life here. After her husband of 51 years passed away, she chose to stay in Highland, where she’s been a member of the same Bridge Club for 40 years. Finding an apartment in Highland makes her one of the fortunate ones, a rare success in a place where housing is increasingly hard to come by. But upstairs, the unoccupied top floor tells another tale. Barbara’s granddaughter, Sophie, stores her belongings there, in limbo. Sophie, her partner, and their child are stuck waiting, hoping for something affordable to open up so they too can call Highland home.
